CHIN SOPHONPANICH
Asian Entrepreneur
Mr. Chin Sophonpanich and a few friends set up Bangkok Bank in 1944. Under his direct leadership, the bank became one of the largest in Southeast Asia. Mr. Chin's diverse interests extended throughout Southeast Asia, encompassing Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.
From 1958 to 1964, Mr. Chin lived and worked in Hong Kong, establishing businesses in the territory that mirrored his activities in Thailand. These businesses, including banking, insurance and other investments, formed the foundation for Asia Financial.
Mr. Chin's business empire now lies in the capable hands of his six sons and one daughter, and their families. The Hong Kong interests of Asia Financial are managed under the direction of Dr. Robin Chan.
ROBIN Y.H. CHAN
Former Chairman of Asia Financial
Dr. Robin Chan was the eldest son of Chin Sophonpanich and the former Chairman of Asia Financial.
Born in Swatow, China, Dr. Chan was educated in Hong Kong and finished his formal education at New York's Graduate Institute of Banking. Dr. Chan received his Honorary Doctorate Degree of Laws from Pepperdine University, California in 1995 and was conferred with Honorary University Fellowships by Hong Kong Baptist University, the University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology in 2010, 2011 and 2013 respectively.
Dr. Chan was very active in community affairs. He was elected as a deputy to the Chinese National People's Congress in 1988, 1993, 1998 and 2003. He was also the Chairman of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce from 1998 to 2002, and currently is the Ex-officio Life Honorary Chairman. Furthermore, he held presidency of the Chiu Chow Chamber of Commerce for several years. He was also the founding Chairman and Ex-president of the Hong Kong Federation of Overseas Chinese Associations.
